Max Black, who comes from a poor working-class family, and Caroline Channing, who was born rich but is now down on her luck, working together at a restaurant in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Williamsburg. Two young women waitressing at a greasy spoon diner strike up an unlikely friendship in the hopes of launching a successful business, if only they can raise the cash.
